Schools & school choice in Edmonton

Test scores and ratings can be a useful, objective data point, but they are not the whole picture: schools with larger ESL or special-needs populations often score lower despite excellent teaching and outcomes. I treat any single metric as one input alongside programs, culture, and fit when helping a family choose, and I always encourage families to visit schools directly.

Under Alberta’s Open Enrolment policy, families are not required to attend their designated catchment school and may apply to any school in the province, subject to available space and the school’s boundary level. This means you can pursue a specialized program, a French Immersion stream, or a school outside your immediate area. Acceptance depends on capacity and boundary rules, so it’s wise to apply early and confirm the details with the school division.

A school’s boundary level tells you how open it is to students from outside its catchment area. Level 1 (Open) accepts any student, Level 2 (Closed) gives priority to families within the catchment, and Level 3 (Lottery) uses a random draw when a school is oversubscribed, while Academic, Charter, and Application schools admit by application or audition. For example, Belgravia School is Level 1 Open (and serves McKernan and Parkallen families too), whereas Windsor Park School is Level 2 Closed Boundary. Boundary levels can change annually, so always verify before you plan around one.

Your designated (catchment) school is determined by your home address, and you can confirm it using Edmonton Public Schools’ Find a School tool at epsb.ca, or the Edmonton Catholic Schools directory at ecsd.net. Because catchment boundaries are updated annually, it’s important to verify against your specific address rather than rely on older information. Under Alberta’s Open Enrolment policy you may also apply to other schools beyond your designated one, subject to space and boundary level.
